Transformers Project Background

Indonesia, as the world’s largest archipelago country, is vigorously promoting renewable energy program, the goal of renewable energy by 2030 to reach 23%, of which the photovoltaic power plant is a key area of development. 2024 the end of the central island of Java, a 100MW photovoltaic power station entered the grid commissioning stage, the power plant is the Indonesian government’s key support for the new energy projects, after the completion of the power to meet the needs of the surrounding 300,000 residents, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 10 percent annually, and reduce the annual carbon dioxide emissions. When completed, the plant will meet the electricity needs of 300,000 residents in the surrounding area and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 100,000 tons per year.
The PV power station is located in the coastal area of Java Island, facing three major environmental challenges: first, high salt spray, high salt content in the coastal air, which is easy to corrode the metal parts of the equipment; second, high humidity, which can reach more than 90% during the rainy season, which can easily lead to moisture on the insulation of the equipment; and third, strong typhoons, which will be attacked by typhoons during the rainy season every year, which requires a high degree of structural stability for the equipment.
When looking for transformer suppliers, the project EPC company focused on the equipment’s salt spray corrosion resistance, PV-specific anti-harmonic performance and structural stability. After rigorous technical benchmarking, sample testing and factory inspection, Jinma Electric’s PV-specific oil-immersed transformer stood out by virtue of its unique anticorrosive process, low-harmonic design and reliable structural performance, and was successfully awarded the bid for the project.

Customized PV transformer solutions

Combined with the environmental characteristics of Indonesia’s coastal photovoltaic power plant and the demand for grid connection, Jinma Electric has customized a PV-specific power distribution solution for the project, with the following specific product configurations and technological innovations:
1. Product Configuration
– Main transformer model: S13-M-2500kVA/35kV PV special oil-immersed transformer 8 sets, used for boosting and grid connection after PV module power generation;
– Ring network cabinet: 4 sets of XGN15-12 outdoor high-voltage ring network cabinets, which are used for hierarchical control and protection of high-voltage power distribution, realizing stable connection between PV power station and power grid.
2. Core technical innovation (Experience)
– Anti-salt spray coating: the transformer tank and metal accessories are coated with special zinc and fluorine coating, with a coating thickness of 120μm, which has passed the neutral salt spray test (ASTM B117) for more than 1,000 hours without corrosion and peeling off, ensuring the long-term stable operation in the coastal high salt spray environment, and solving the industry pain point of corrosion of the equipment in coastal areas;
– Anti-harmonic winding: For the large number of high harmonics (mainly 3rd, 5th and 7th harmonics) output from PV inverter, it adopts special shielding winding structure, increasing the winding shielding layer, effectively suppressing harmonic currents, preventing transformer overheating and insulation aging, prolonging the service life of the equipment, and at the same time, reducing the harmonic pollution to the power grid to ensure that the quality of grid-connected power meets the standards of the Indonesian power grid;
– Strong oil air-cooled temperature control: equipped with intelligent temperature control system, it can automatically start the fan according to the transformer load and ambient temperature to ensure the stable operation of the transformer in a wide temperature range of -10℃~50℃ to avoid overheating and tripping of the equipment under the high temperature weather, and meanwhile it can also ensure the normal startup under the low temperature environment;
– Typhoon-resistant structure: optimize the structure of transformer tank and base, increase the base reinforcement device, the ring network cabinet adopts reinforced shell, which can withstand the impact of grade 12 typhoon, to ensure the structural stability of the equipment under the typhoon weather, to avoid equipment damage.

Strict quality verification

In order to ensure that the project is foolproof, Jinma Electric will send the transformer and ring main unit of the project to the National Transformer Quality Supervision and Inspection Center (the domestic authoritative third-party testing organization) for third-party type test, and all the test items are qualified at once, the specific test results are as follows:
1. lightning impact test: full-wave impact voltage of 75kV, equipment insulation performance is good, no breakdown, no flashover phenomenon, qualified;
2. temperature rise test: under rated load, the temperature rise of transformer winding is controlled within 65K, far below the national standard (75K), with excellent heat dissipation performance;
3. short-circuit withstand ability: through the severe short-circuit test, transformer windings, iron core without deformation, no leakage of the oil tank, verified the mechanical stability and electrical safety of the transformer in the fault state;
4. salt spray test: the equipment is placed in the salt spray test chamber, continuous testing for 1000 hours, the surface of the equipment is free of corrosion, no shedding of coatings, and the anti-salt spray performance meets the design requirements.

Delivery and Installation

Considering the limited lifting conditions in the coastal port of Java Island, Indonesia, which is inaccessible to large cranes, Gemma Electric provides a split packaging solution, packaging the transformer body and tank separately in a small wooden box, which is convenient for loading, unloading and transporting by small cranes and saves the transportation cost at the same time.
In January 2025, 12 sets of equipment were sent to the port of Weliwen, Indonesia in two shipments, and the whole process was transported by sea, equipped with a professional logistics tracking team to monitor the status of cargo transportation in real time to ensure the safe arrival of the goods.
During on-site installation, Gemma Electric sent two senior technical engineers to work closely with the EPC team, utilized BIM technology for pipeline pre-layout, planned the installation routes and installation sequence in advance, avoided on-site installation conflicts, and completed the positioning, wiring, and commissioning of all the equipments in only 7 days to ensure that the PV plant was connected to the grid on time, and the installation and commissioning work was completed 5 days earlier than the client’s expectation.

Project Significance

This project is another milestone for Jinma Electric in Southeast Asia PV market, and it is also the first time that Jinma Electric’s PV special equipment is applied to Indonesia coastal PV power plant in large scale, and the successful landing of the project has important market significance:
1. Technical verification: It proves that Jinma Electric’s PV special equipment can adapt to the harsh environment of high salt spray, high humidity and strong typhoon along the coast, and the performance of anti-harmonic, anti-corrosion and structural stability reaches the international advanced level;
2. Market Expansion: It further consolidates the position of Golden Horse Electric in Southeast Asia PV market, and lays a solid foundation for the subsequent expansion of PV projects in Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and other countries;
3. environmental value: after the equipment is put into operation, the power station power generation efficiency has been increased by 3%, and carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by more than 100,000 tons per year, which helps Indonesia achieve the goal of renewable energy development and practice the concept of green environmental protection.
Customer comment: “Jinma Electric’s PV transformer perfectly solves our anti-corrosion problem in the coastal area, the technical parameters fully comply with the requirements of IEC 60076-7 (Application Guidelines for Power Transformers), and the timely delivery, efficient installation, and the technical team’s professional ability is very strong, it is a reliable partner for our PV project. “
